We have been learning all about our body this month and some topics may be harder to discuss with little ones because of the complexity. If your child is anything like my daughter, hands on learning is the way to go! Here is an easy, simple method to teach digestion to your preschooler.
- Large Ziploc bag
- Can of Coca-Cola
First have your child break of pieces of the bread to place inside the bowl. This is to simulate taking bites of a sandwich. Help them pour some milk into the bowl to simulate them taking sips of their drink. Use the fork to smash the bread, simulating chewing.
Once this has been completed, pour the contents of the bowl into the Ziploc bag. Talk about how the stomach has acids that help break down the food you eat. Add the Coca-Cola to the bag to simulate the stomach acids. Have them use their hands, simulating stomach muscles, to mix the contents of the bag. Let your child look through the bag to see how the bread has been broken down by the stomach acids.
You can certainly continue the process if your child is old enough and you still have their attention. (We stopped after the stomach acids). Using a cheesecloth simulating the intestines, you can strain the fluid from the Ziploc bag and talk about your body absorbing the nutrients. You can also then show them what is left in the cheesecloth as the food that is expelled from the body. You may also want to bring your child to the toilet and let them flush it down!
