Over the last month, my daughter has gone from having zero interest in learning how to write letters to wanting to write everything. She was so proud of herself for learning a ton of sight words as well as being able to write just about every letter of the alphabet now. She can write her name and all the names of the people in her family.
I don’t like giving her worksheet after worksheet to practice (nor does she like it), so when I found out about Ben the Rooster, I thought this would be a great way for Savanna to practice writing!
Ben the Rooster is a pen pal for your kids! He sends two postcards each month to your little one with an activity. The first time you receive a postcard from Ben, it comes in a small envelope with a few extra reply cards. (Hey Moms, keep those extra reply cards somewhere safe…I didn’t and we ended up losing our extras! But no worries, if you lose them, you can buy an extra pack of reply cards like I just did!)
Savanna was so excited to receive her first card from Ben. We read it together and she immediately ran to her art table to draw her response to him. Ben wanted to know what her favorite book was (and if you know us at all, you won’t be surprised to find out that her favorite book is “How the Crayons Saved the Rainbow“).
After she finished with her drawing, she wanted to run outside immediately to put the postcard in the mailbox.
A few hours after we put the card in the mailbox, Savanna started crying because she missed Ben. She wanted more cards from him.
But then we got our next card and all was right with the world! Our second card was all about Ben going back to school. We met one of his friends, Suzy the Cow, who thinks she’s pretty funny with her jokes. And just like last time, Savanna ran off to her desk to write her response. Ben wanted to know what was in Savanna’s backpack. Savanna doesn’t go to school, but she still has a backpack for when we travel so she told Ben all about it.
This time on her letter back, she practiced writing her name all by herself! Hopefully Ben can read it too!
In addition to the postcards your little one will receive in the mail during the month, parents will also receive an email with some ideas of what you can do with your child once you receive the postcard.
I absolutely love the idea of having a pen pal that allows Savanna to practice writing and drawing. It makes learning so much more fun!
