Math for preschoolers is not the same math that you generally think about when you hear that word. Early math skills start with play (doesn’t everything?!). Encourage your child to investigate math concepts with a very simple measuring activity. You can use any object to measure – blocks, rulers, toys etc.
Since this month is all our our bodies, we are measuring different body parts. Creating visuals and allowing your child to explore math concepts hands-on is vital to their brain development.
- Measuring materials – we are using blocks but you can also use unifix cubes, legos etc.
Get the whole family involved by tracing each others hands, feet, arms and anything else! If your child is ready, you can also have them write the names of the person each hand belongs to.
Talk to them about the highest point on each drawing so you can measure the full length. Have your child guess how many cubes long your hand or foot will be, then have them stack the cubes to see how close they were to their guess. Have them write their guesses and the actual number on the paper.
