Whenever my husband goes out of town for work, the days seem to just drag. I don’t know what it is about knowing that no other adult is coming back to your house at the end of the day that makes me feel this way. So on days he is gone, I always have to make plans to basically be out of the house all day.
Last week we decided to try out the zoo. We have been a few times for parties but have never ventured there on our own, even though we only live about 30 minutes away. I think the primary reason is because it is South Florida and the temperatures are regularly 90 (or more) degrees. And who wants to be outside all day in the sun if it’s not at the pool?
It seems that any time we go to an amusement park of some sort (Disney, zoo, museum, etc), it always has to start with ice cream. Today was no different! We got the ice cream as soon as we walked into the zoo. I wanted to try out the new Mission Everglades in the front of the zoo, but with the dripping ice cream, that was going to have to wait until the end of our visit.
So we started heading back to the big loop, passing by the turtles and the warthogs, before heading in to the Amazon. But before we could even walk into the Amazon exhibits, Savanna found some water spouts to play with and spent a good half hour (or maybe more) playing in the water.
Once she was completely soaked (even though I had told her multiple times that I had brought her bathing suit), she decided she wanted to go play at the bigger splash pad back towards the front of the zoo. She changed into her bathing suit and off we went.
When she finally had enough of playing at the splash pad, we headed back to the Amazon to see the big snakes. There were more animals of course, but the big snakes were what she was most interested in. She even made me take a few pictures to share with Nana because Nana is scared of snakes.
By now it was around 4pm and I knew that I wanted to leave shortly after 4 in order to beat the rush hour traffic home. But just as I said “let’s get ready to go”, Savanna told me she wanted to see the elephants…which are all the way in the back of the zoo. I know that I could have said, “sorry, we will see them next time”, but I felt bad so off we went.
I ran basically the whole way with Savanna laughing at me.
While we were back there, we also got to see some of her other favorite animals – giraffes, zebras, rhinos and hippos.
All in all, we had a great day at the zoo and I decided to buy the annual membership. We never did make it to Mission Everglades (or more than half of the zoo) so we will definitely go back soon!
