After a lot of thought, we made the decision last month to put our daughter into the free VPK program our state offers starting in August. Even though we still feel homeschooling is ultimately best for her educationally, we feel that socially she needs more involvement with others. We have a lot of playdates, so she gets the interactions with other kids her age. Her problem is that she cannot be away from me for more than five seconds without becoming hysterical. We have tried everything from dropping her off at sports like gymnastics and ballet or art classes to yoga classes where she can still see me behind a glass wall.
She can’t handle being with another adult, and we feel that it is a problem we need to address now. Could it get better as she gets older? Maybe. But why not take advantage of the free VPK our state offers for 4-5 year olds.
The VPK program is three hours each day so she will still be home most of the day with me. We aren’t going to try to tackle a full curriculum since she will be doing a lot at school. Instead, we are going to do a full year of a Spanish curriculum!
In addition to our Spanish curriculum, we will also be doing process art or other smaller activities on a daily basis. Any interesting ones I will add to our blog!
